Luigi Ghirri

폴카갤러리에서 보게된 루이지 기리의 로마 사진전. 나중에 찾아보니 꽤나 유명한 이탈리아 작가였는데 나는 이번에 처음 들어봤다. 폴카갤러리는 마레에서 바스티유로 걸어가는 동선에서 시간적 여유가 조금이라도 있으면 항상 들리는 곳이다. 전시가 꼭 마음에 들지 않아도 도록을 보는 재미도 있다. rdc에는 Françoise Huguier, 더 넓은 공간인 지하에는 Luigi Ghirri의 작품으로 가득했다. 루이지 기리의 다른 주제로 나온 작품들도 여럿 있었지만 이 전시에서 보았던 사진들이 가장 좋았는데 인터넷으로 찾기란 어려운 일이었다. 전시가 끝나기 전에 한번 더 가서 볼 수 있었으면 좋겠다. 내가 생각하고 있는 이탈리아의 이미지를 그대로 표현한 사진들이라는 인상을 받았다. 사진 그 자체로 빛바랜 이탈리아의 건물들을 대변하는 것 같기도 하다. 루이지는 종종 사물의 뒷모습을 포착하기도 했다. 내가 밀라노의 묘지에서 본 양 동상의 형태를 뒤에서 촬영한 것, 놀이기구를 후면에서 찍은 것도 있다.

Throughout his life Ghirri wrote insightfully on photography and the photographers that interested him. He also noted the people who influenced his work—Walker Evans, Jorge Luis Borges, Fernando Pessoa, and Bob Dylan, among others. Teju Cole writing in the New York Times in 2016 related Ghirri’s work to the poems of Elizabeth Bishop. He saw that the abundance of small everyday objects, maps, and travel in Bishop’s poems share a theme with Ghirri’s own globes, tourist signs, and postcards. Cole also astutely observed that both artists presented these themes “in miniature without being trivial.”
